This past Sunday we took the 2 hour drive to Houston to participate in the H Town Sneaker Summit 2011. The event was held at The Toyota Center and was full of vendors and sneaker exhibitors. The Kobe VI BHM upper features a special treatment on the material that gives it multiple ridges and flowing lines, which is in fact a tribute to the African cultural art form of facial and bodily scarification. That form of body-art has been practiced in African tribal communities for quite a long time, and symbolizes strength, courage, and leadership. The predominantly black upper of this year’s Black History Month Air Force 1 is a nod to the past, because in the early years of the basketball, shoes on the court were almost always black. The highlights of gold throughout the upper, which is constructed from Stetson leather and features a woodblock cut print by African American artist Hele Woodruff, is a reminder of the golden moment we all are striving to achieve in our lives.
